Role introductions and an exemplar scenario for the Clinical Nurse Consultant

This page appears at the Disaster Down Under eSim Phase 1: Planning Stage, which is the beginning of the simulation. Students are directed to find their role in the list below and follow the instructions. They must participate in their role's allocated discussion boards as per the instructions. They can also view all the scenarios (for all roles) and participate in any of the discussion boards to gain a better feel for the 'big picture' and contribute on a broader basis.

Clinical Nurse Consultant Burns Unit Trauma Hospital (Adult Unit)

You are the Clinical Nurse Consultant of the Burns Unit in a major trauma hospital. For the purposes of this exercise you are responsible for:

  • Day-to-day clinical management of inpatient burns patients
  • Daily allocation of clinical workload for nursing staff
  • Resource management NOT including staffing levels and rostering.

The Burns Unit has 8 beds in the form of single rooms. You are co-located next to the Intensive Care Unit and operating rooms. The Burns Unit has its own operating room. The Burns Unit does not take ventilated patients. The Burns Unit is in a different wing to the other general hospital wards.

Start thinking about what you know, what you have been asked to do and how you might go about it. Make note of the people that you will need to interact with to provide you with further information.

THEN: Make an assessment of available and required resources. Communicate with others to negotiate the provision of those resources. Gather information and start to make decisions.

Keep a record of why you make certain decisions and what has influenced you. You will be expected to provide a summary of the following issues from your persona's perspective.

Burns Assessment Team Nurse (Adult Burns Unit)

As you go through the scenario start thinking about what you know, what you have been asked to do and how you might go about it.

You are the Clinical Nurse of the Burns Unit in a major trauma hospital. For the purposes of this exercise you are the senior nurse on the floor in the Burns Unit and responsible for:

  • Clinical management of inpatients of burns unit
  • Shift allocation of workload
  • Deputising for the Clinical Nurse Consultant in their absence. (See above)

The Burns Unit has 8 beds in the form of single rooms. You are co-located next to the Intensive Care Unit and operating rooms. The Burns Unit has its own operating room. The Burns Unit does not take ventilated patients. The Burns Unit is in a different wing to the other general hospital wards.

Nurse Unit Manager Trauma Hospital

You are the Nurse Manager for the service that includes the Burns Unit in a major trauma hospital. For the purpose of this exercise you are responsible for:

  • Human Resource management
  • Bed management

The Burns Unit has 8 beds in the form of single rooms. You are co-located next to the Intensive Care Unit and operating rooms. The Burns Unit has its own operating room. The Burns Unit does not take ventilated patients. The Burns Unit is in a different wing to the other general hospital wards.

Clinical Nurse Consultant Burns Unit Paediatric Hospital

You are the Clinical Nurse Consultant of the Burns Unit in a major paediatric hospital. For the purposes of this exercise you are responsible for:

  • Day-to-day clinical management of inpatient burns patients
  • Daily allocation of clinical workload for nursing staff
  • Resource management NOT including staffing levels and rostering.

The Burns Unit is part of a general surgical ward. There are three single rooms available plus two double rooms and four 4-bed bays. You are in a different building to the Intensive Care Unit and Operating Rooms.  The Burns Unit does not take ventilated patients.

Start thinking about what you know, what you have been asked to do and how you might go about it. Make note of the people that you will need to interact with to provide you with further information.

THEN: Make an assessment of available and required resources. Communicate with others to negotiate the provision of those resources. Gather information and start to make decisions.

Nurse in Charge Surgical Ward Staging Hospital

You are the Nurse in Charge of the surgical ward in the staging hospital. For the purposes of this exercise you are responsible for:

  • Day-to-day clinical management of inpatients
  • Daily allocation of clinical workload for nursing staff
  • Resource management including staffing levels and rostering
  • Shift allocation of workload.

The surgical ward has 28 beds including six single rooms. The surgical ward is on a different floor to both the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit.
